Flavia Pennetta has said that she is "happy" to have won the BNP Paribas Open.
The 32-year-old Italian defeated world number three Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2 6-1 in the final at Indian Wells on Sunday.
"I'm happy, really happy," WTA's official website quotes her as saying. "I think I need a few days to realise this.
"Right now I'm too calm, I think. I called my dad, and he couldn't breathe. I told him, 'Papa, breathe!' After so many years and so much work and everything, this is the moment I was waiting for. And it comes when you least expect it.
"In the beginning of the tournament I never expected to be the champion, or even be in the final or semi-final. I was just here trying to play my best tennis. For me, this is something I was waiting for a long time."
Pennetta will move up from 21 to 12 in the WTA rankings because of her victory.
