The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced that they have mutually agreed to part ways with guard Carl Nicks.
The 29-year-old played just two games for the NFC South side last year after injuring his toe which led to an MRSA infection, although he was medically cleared to take part in their training camp.
In a statement released by the team, Nicks said: "I'd like to thank the Buccaneers organisation for working with me as I have attempted to get myself back on the football field. However, after careful consideration, I have made the decision to step away from the game.
"This was by no means an easy decision, but I believe that it is what is best for me and my family as well as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers."
General manager Jason Licht added: "I know this has been a difficult time for Carl and his family, but we respect his decision and thank him for his effort in trying to get back on the football field."
Nicks signed a five-year contract worth $47.5m [£27.9m] with the team in 2012.
