Tim Bresnan is confident of fighting off competition from Steven Finn to secure a place in England's XI for the opening Test against India.

Tim Bresnan is optimistic that his performances in the warm-up matches have been enough to earn him a place in the England XI for the first Test against India.

The Yorkshire all-rounder is competing with Steven Finn to join James Anderson and Stuart Broad in England's seam attack, providing vice-captain Broad recovers from his heel injury.

Finn has also had fitness concerns ahead of the series, but took a full part in training today ahead of the opening Test in Ahmedabad on November 15.

The paceman's return to health sets up a selection headache and while Bresnan acknowledges the stiff competition, he is confident that his form puts him firmly in Alastair Cook's plans.

"I've bowled pretty well, got a few wickets, got a few runs in the first game so I think I've got a good chance," he said.

"Finny when he's fit and firing should be able to walk into any Test side in the world, 90-plus mph coming from 6'7", so it's a massive boost. There's no reason why he shouldn't be available for selection."

England will play four Tests against India, before playing five one-day internationals and two Twenty20 matches.
