Preview: Peterborough United vs. Charlton Athletic - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's League One clash between Peterborough United and Charlton Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Promotion-challenging Charlton Athletic will be bidding to make it three straight wins in League One when they continue their campaign with a contest against an in-form Peterborough United on Saturday afternoon.

Charlton are fourth in the League One table, five points behind second-placed Wycombe Wanderers, while Peterborough are 18th, now six points clear of the relegation zone thanks to their recent strong form.

Peterborough are unbeaten in League One since the reverse game with Charlton in the middle of February, with Darren Ferguson's side winning three and drawing three of their last six fixtures in the third tier of English football.

The Posh were 1-0 winners over Cambridge United last weekend, with the result moving them into 18th spot in the table, six points outside of the relegation zone, while they are only three points off 14th-placed Rotherham United.

Peterborough finished fourth in League One last season, ultimately losing to Oxford United in the semi-finals of the playoffs, but it has been a tough 2024-25 campaign for the club, who are battling for survival.

Ferguson's side have picked up 26 points from their 18 home league matches this season, while they will be welcoming a Charlton outfit that have 25 points to show from their 18 games on their travels.

Peterborough have won two of their last three League One fixtures against Charlton, but they suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Addicks when the two teams locked horns for the reverse game earlier this season.

Charlton will enter this match off the back of a 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic, with the result leaving them fourth in the League One table, boasting 66 points from their 37 league games this season.

The Addicks are five points off second-placed Wycombe in the battle for automatic promotion, while they sit six points ahead of seventh-placed Bolton Wanderers in the fight to make the playoffs.

Nathan Jones's side are in excellent form, winning five and drawing one of their last six league matches, including their last two against Crawley Town and Wigan Athletic, with their last dropped points being a 0-0 draw with Stockport County on March 8.

Charlton have been defensively strong this season, only conceding 32 times, and they are certainly well-placed to challenge for a return to the Championship for the 2025-26 campaign.

The Addicks have not been present in the second tier of English football since the 2019-20 campaign, and they finished last season in a disappointing 16th, but there has been a huge improvement during the current season.

Team News

Macaulay Gillesphey of Charlton Athletic on January 16, 2025© Imago

Peterborough will be without the services of Tayo Edun on Saturday, with the defender sent off against Cambridge last weekend, so there will have to be a change to the defensive unit against Charlton.

Carl Johnston is expected to be introduced into the XI, but it might otherwise be an unchanged side from the one that took to the field for the first whistle against Cambridge.

Malik Mothersille has scored 14 times during an impressive campaign, and there will again be a spot in an advanced area for the 21-year-old, while Abraham Odoh should also be in the side.

As for Charlton, head coach Jones is likely to name an unchanged side from the game against Wigan last weekend.

Matty Godden has scored 15 times in 37 appearances this season, and there will again be a spot in the final third of the field for the striker, who hit a brace in the contest with Wigan.

Luke Berry has been another impressive performer this term, finding the back of the net on six occasions from midfield, and he will again line up in the middle for the promotion hopefuls on Saturday afternoon, while Macaulay Gillesphey will continue in the middle of the defence.

Peterborough United possible starting lineup:
Steer; Dornelly, Wallin, Hughes, Johnston; Kyprianou, Collins; Poku, Mothersille, Odoh; Ihionvien

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Mannion; Ramsay, Jones, Gillesphey, Small; Coventry, Docherty; Watson, Berry, Campbell; Godden

We say: Peterborough United 1-1 Charlton Athletic

Charlton are in excellent form, but the same can also be said for Peterborough, who are proving to be incredibly difficult to beat at this moment in time; it would not be a surprise to see a Charlton victory, but we are backing the hosts to secure a share of the spoils.
