Canada's Jennifer Abel: 'Commonwealth gold means the world to me'

Women's 1m springboard gold medallist Jennifer Abel tells Sports Mole that retaining her Commonwealth title "means the world" to her.

Canadian diver Jennifer Abel has said that winning Commonwealth Games gold at 1m springboard "means the world" to her.

Abel, 22, failed to retain her 3m synchro title with Pamela Ware on Wednesday, finishing second behind England's Alicia Blagg and Rebecca Gallantree, and she was distraught afterwards.

However, she got back on top of the podium today and told Sports Mole: "It feels really good and I mean that. We were disappointed with our performance in synchro.

"Today I was a little bit nervous, I wasn't expecting a gold. I was more expecting a good performance.

"Four years ago I won 1m too in Delhi and now seeing that I can win again with the same list but more technique, it really means the world to me."

Abel's work is not done yet and she will look to improve on her silver medal from Delhi in the 3m springboard final tomorrow.

"I'm really excited [for the 3m]. I know that I have to be calm, I have to think the same that I did today then everything will be fine."

Abel was joined on the podium in the 1m by Australian duo Maddison Keeney and Esther Qin.
