Chris Mears, Jack Laugher score silver in London

Young GB divers Jack Laugher and Chris Mears take the silver 3m synchro medal at the London meet of the World Diving Series.

Chris Mears and Jack Laugher have picked up a silver medal in the 3m synchro at the World Diving Series in London.

The pair's total score of 433.80 included a 95.76 for their most ambitious dive, the forward 4-1/2 tuck, in the final round.

Mears had been a doubt for the competition after suffering a back spasm during training in Russia last weekend and only joined the lineup late yesterday.

China's Qin Kai and Cao Yuan took their usual top spot on the podium despite a subpar performance by their own standard, ultimately finishing 14 points clear on 447.75.

Russian duo Evgeny Kuznetsov and Ilya Zakharov posted the best score for a single dive with a 96.90 for their final-round 4-1/2, which pushed them within a whisker of Mears and Laugher for a total of 429.21.

Elsewhere, Patrick Hausding and Stephan Feck of Germany were left disappointed when a failed dive in round four saw Hausding suffer knee lock on his final jump, forcing him to drop straight into the pool.

Laugher returns to action tomorrow morning, competing as an individual in the men's 3m springboard preliminaries.
