Massimiliano Allegri says that Kevin-Prince Boateng's stand against racism could be an "important signal" for the future.

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri hopes that Kevin-Prince Boateng's stand against racism will inspire widespread change within the game.

The Ghanaian stormed off the field after being subjected to racial abuse during the Rossoneri's friendly match with fourth-tier side Pro Patia this afternoon.

It is the latest racially-motivated incident to mar the sport, and Allegri said that Milan had no other choice but to abandon the match.

"We are disappointed and saddened by what has happened," Allegri told reporters. "We need to stop these uncivilized gestures. We are sorry for all the other fans who came here for a beautiful day of sport.

"We promise to return, and we are sorry for the club and players of Pro Patria, but we could not make any other decision.

"I hope it can be an important signal."

Milan resume their league season at home to Siena on Sunday.
