The Argentine Football Association reveals that Jorge Sampaoli has left his position as head coach of Argentina.

The Argentine Football Association has revealed that Jorge Sampaoli has left his position as head coach of Argentina following a disappointing 2018 World Cup.

The South American nation managed to squeeze into the knockout round of this summer's competition, but suffered a 4-3 defeat to France in the round of 16.

Sampaoli only took charge of Argentina in May 2017, but was reportedly under orders from Lionel Messi when it came to selection during this summer's World Cup.

The 58-year-old agreed to 'mutually terminate his contract', according to a statement from the AFA.

"Today, the Argentina Football Association and the former national team coach, Jorge Sampaoli, have mutually agreed to the termination of their contract. Likewise, the physical trainer, Jorge Desio and the video analyst, Matias Manna, also disassociated themselves," read the statement.

Argentina's performance at this year's World Cup was their worst in the famous tournament since 2002.
