Former Argentina international Ossie Ardiles believes that forward Gonzalo Higuain can have a similar impact to Robin van Persie if he completes a move to Arsenal.

Former Argentina international Ossie Ardiles has backed compatriot Gonzalo Higuain to make an impact at Arsenal if he completes a move from Real Madrid.

It has been reported that the forward is close to sealing a move to the Emirates Stadium, and Ardiles believes that the 25-year-old is as good as previous Gunners talisman Robin van Persie.

The former Spurs boss told Goal.com: "As good as Robin van Persie? Of course he can be, that's how good Higuain is. You remember that when Van Persie arrived he was not exactly, immediately, the best player, it took a bit of time. But he was younger - Higuain is much more experienced.

"He's a top, top player. He will always score goals. He likes to be in the box all the time and he works hard for his team - wherever he goes, he's going to be great for the team that he's joining."

Higuain has scored 122 goals in 266 appearances for Real Madrid.
