Rio Ferdinand: 'Danny Welbeck can flourish and explode at Arsenal'

Rio Ferdinand is confident that his former Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck can thrive at Arsenal if they make him the main striker.

Queens Park Rangers defender Rio Ferdinand believes that his former Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck has all the qualities needed to succeed at Arsenal.

The England international joined the Gunners on transfer deadline day yesterday on a five-year deal for a reported £16m fee.

The 23-year-old's first-team chances have become limited at Old Trafford over the years due to Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie standing in his way.

Following the capture of Radamel Falcao from Monaco on a season-long loan yesterday, Welbeck opted to leave the former Premier League champions.

Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: "Welbeck is a top signing for arsenal. Good business done by them. If he gets that trust to be no.1 striker at AFC he will flourish & explode."

Welbeck came through the ranks at United and made his senior debut back in 2008.
