Andre Marriner 'struggling to come to terms with Arsenal red card error'

Referee Andre Marriner is reportedly struggling to come to terms with the mistake that resulted in the wrong Arsenal player being sent off.

Referee Andre Marriner reportedly remains devastated by his mistake that resulted in the wrong Arsenal player being sent off against Chelsea at the weekend.

The match official showed a straight red card to Kieran Gibbs after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain handled the ball in the box during Saturday's 6-0 win for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Despite Oxlade-Chamberlain appearing to tell Marriner that he was the one who committed the handball offence, the referee stuck by his decision to give the wrong player his marching orders.

According to the Daily Mail, Marriner has told friends that he is struggling to come to terms with his blunder and has admitted that he has been 'deeply affected' by the incident.

Marriner is expected to learn today whether he will be dropped from the next round of Premier League fixtures this week.
