Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson brands the Gunners a "middle-of-the-table team" as Mikel Arteta's side struggle for consistency.

Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has claimed that the Gunners have the look of a "middle-of-the-table team" as they continue to struggle for consistency this season.

Mikel Arteta's side have won four, drawn one and lost four of their nine Premier League matches in 2020-21 to sit down in 12th position in the division.

Merson has said that his former side were extremely fortunate to pick up a point against Leeds United last weekend and has also hit out at Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, claiming that the Gabon international, who has only scored two league goals this season, "is bringing absolutely nothing to the party".

"Some people are saying one step forward, one step back. One step back?! That's kind. They were a million miles off Leeds last Sunday. It did Arsenal a favour when Nicolas Pepe got sent off, Leeds then ran out of ideas because Arsenal had to sit deep," Merson told Sky Sports News.

"Only a couple weeks before, Leicester [City] went to Leeds and put four past them. Leeds let in goals. The teams that beat them are the teams with players who can glide past their defenders; Arsenal don't have that.

"Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is bringing absolutely nothing to the party at the moment. He played central and he was ineffective as he was before. You watch them and think they are a middle-of-the-table team.

"Looking back at that win at Manchester United, it doesn't look so great now. Do not even start me on Manchester United, it's no big licks going there and getting a result at the moment."

The Gunners will be looking to return to winning ways in the league when they welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday night before travelling to high-flying Tottenham Hotspur next weekend.
