Gary Neville: 'Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez not leaders'

Arsenal attacking midfielders Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez do not take enough responsibility in big games, says Gary Neville.

England coach Gary Neville has criticised Arsenal for having a lack of leaders on the pitch following their 0-0 home draw with Liverpool.

The Gunners made a slow start to the game and relied on two saves from goalkeeper Petr Cech to prevent them going behind, while their usual fluent passing game was scolded by an unimpressed Neville.

The ex-Manchester United right-back hit out at attacking players Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, and claimed that they aren't producing their best in big games.

He told Sky Sports News: "They're fantastic players but do they take responsibility for their teammates? No. I don't think I've ever seen Mesut Ozil take responsibility for the rest of his team. I've seen him have good games, where he passes the ball well, gets involved and gets assists but doesn't get enough goals.

"Alexis Sanchez is someone that plays in moments and is tenacious. If you look at that back six tonight, Cech is the only experienced one in the back seven.

"The experience was in the front of the pitch, Olivier Giroud, Sanchez and Ozil – they're not the type of players that will take responsibility for the players behind them. I was so surprised tonight at the poor quality Arsenal showed on the ball, they gave it away time after time."

Arsenal have earned four points from their opening three games this season.
