Sylvain Wiltord announces retirement

Former Arsenal and France striker Sylvain Wiltord announces his retirement from football.

Former Arsenal striker Sylvain Wiltord has announced his retirement from football with immediate effect.

The 38-year-old, who had four years with the Gunners up until 2004, spent last season with Ligue 2 side Nantes.

Following his announcement, the French Football Federation paid tribute to a player that scored a vital goal for his nation during the Euro 2000 final against Italy.

"All of our football fans who were following the final of the European Championship on the evening of July 2 in Rotterdam as supporters of France will long remember Sylvain Wiltord's equalising goal in added time before the French won in extra time," read a statement from the FFF.

"This memory will remain etched in the history of our sport, because he made a big contribution to winning the European title."

Wiltord won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups during his stint with Arsenal.
