Arsenal move into fifth in the Premier League with a thumping 4-0 win over Wigan on Saturday afternoon.

Arsenal moved into fifth position with a thumping 4-0 win over Wigan on Saturday afternoon.

Wigan, buoyed by their win over Sunderland last weekend, began the match in confident form with Victor Moses leading the charge down the right-hand side.

Arsenal appeared to enter another gear midway through the half, however, and opened the scoring after 28 minutes when Mikel Arteta fired in from distance, albeit via a howler from Wigan goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi.

It was 2-0 moments later when Thomas Vermaelen headed home a Robin van Persie corner just before the half-hour mark.

Arsenal had a strong penalty shout turned down when Aaron Ramsey was felled in the box moments after half time, but no decision was forthcoming.

Arsenal's frustrations were short-lived however as Gervinho put the away side 3-0 ahead on the hour mark after he was released by Robin Van Persie.

The Gunners controlled the match in the latter stages and added a fourth after 78 minutes when Van Persie slotted home from close range.

Arsenal will look to continue their rise up the table when they face Everton next weekend while Wigan travel to West Brom.
