Darren Bent: 'Arsenal could sign Jan Vertonghen'

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent claims that Arsenal could make an attempt to sign Jan Vertonghen on a free transfer.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has suggested that Arsenal could make an attempt to sign Jan Vertonghen on a free transfer at the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

Vertonghen has made 294 appearances for Spurs since a 2012 move from Ajax, including nine in all competitions at the start of the current season.

The Belgium international will see his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expire next summer, though, and there are currently no indications that he will be penning a new deal with Mauricio Pochettino's side.

Bent has claimed that Arsenal "could do" with the 32-year-old, and the pundit would not be surprised to see the Gunners make an attempt to raid their rivals for the experienced centre-back.

"Jan Vertonghen, playing at the centre of the defence, are there too many more that are going to be better than him? If you're going to take him on a free, Arsenal could do with him," Bent told Football Insider.

"If he's on a free don't be surprised if they're in the mix for him as well. I think it's a situation they need to address but at the same time I wouldn't want to see these players walk away for nothing. It's a difficult one, they're down to a free, they're obviously not going to sign new contracts so what do you do?"

Sol Campbell was the last player to join Arsenal from Tottenham, with the former England international completing a switch to the Gunners in 2001.
