Ian Wright: 'Aubameyang deserves better than Arsenal'

Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright says that he would understand if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang decided to leave the Gunners this summer.

Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright has insisted that he would understand if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang decided to seek a move away from the club in this summer's transfer window.

The 30-year-old has scored 61 times in 97 appearances for the Gunners since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018, including 20 in 32 outings during the 2019-20 campaign.

The forward will see his contract at the Emirates Stadium expire in June 2021, though, and there have been suggestions that Barcelona could move for him this summer.

Wright has said that the Gabon international "deserves" to be playing in a team winning the Premier League title and challenging for a spot in the Champions League final.

"If you can imagine him in a better team then he himself would be winning Premier Leagues and vying for places in Champions League finals and I think he deserves that," Wright told Premier League Productions.

"You don't see him particularly vocal on the pitch [no] pointing and screaming but it's what he does in respect of his leadership with the goals that he scores.

"If you take his goals out of that team then they're in a massive heap of trouble. Arsenal need a few more players to kick in with their form to help him. We're talking about a goalscorer who is scoring at the rate of a Champions League player, a world class goalscorer.

"We're talking about the last big contract in his career. I just hope that the love that he has for the club and the fans have for him is enough for him but I wouldn't want to be in his position because it's a tough one for him."

Despite the speculation, Aubameyang, who has also been linked with Inter Milan, recently told Arsenal's official website that he is "really happy" to be at the club.
