Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez reveals that he would like to extend Ryo Miyaichi's loan spell at the club.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has revealed that he will speak to Arsenal about extending the loan spell of midfielder Ryo Miyaichi.

Miyiachi has made just seven appearances for the Latics this season, but Martinez has admitted that he would like longer to work with the Japanese international.

The 39-year-old told reporters: "We will have to speak with Arsenal and we need to assess and make sure they are happy with the progression of the player.

"Ryo is a footballer that we really admire and has an incredible future in front of him so if we could work with him for a longer period we would be very happy to do that."

The former Swansea City boss revealed earlier this week that Miyaichi could miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.
