Atletico Madrid have announced that Diego Simeone has agreed to become the club's new coach.

The former Argentina and Atletico midfielder has taken over the role from Gregorio Manzano, who was sacked earlier this week.

"[Simeone] has accepted the offer the club made on Thursday for the rest of this season and one more campaign and he will arrive in the Spanish capital on Monday to begin his work in charge of the team," read a statement on the club's official website.

Simone's first game in charge will be a trip to Malaga on Sunday, January 8.
