Southampton to demand Toby Alderweireld compensation following Spurs move?

Southampton will reportedly demand £2m compensation from Atletico Madrid following Toby Alderweireld's move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Southampton will reportedly demand £2m compensation from Atletico Madrid after they missed out on signing Toby Alderweireld on a permanent deal.

The Saints were keen to sign the defender following last season's loan spell, but the Belgian opted to join Tottenham Hotspur yesterday on a five-year deal.

Ronald Koeman is believed to have had the option to buy Alderweireld for £6.8m, but Southampton claim that Atletico failed to cancel the clause before the defender signed for Spurs in a reported £13m deal.

Now, according to the Daily Star, Southampton will go ahead with a compensation claim as they believe that the Spanish club breached an agreement.

Reports have claimed that a clause stating that Alderweireld could not join another Premier League club was also written into the loan deal, but Atletico argue that the agreement expired when the loan came to an end.
