Another blow: Barcelona reveal month-long injury absence for key man

Barcelona announce that one of their key players will be absent from the first-team squad for at least a month through injury.

Barcelona have announced that Dani Olmo will be sidelined through injury until after the October international break.

On Sunday afternoon, the Catalan giants made it five successive victories in La Liga as they breezed past Girona in the derby on away territory.

Hansi Flick's team head into Champions League action later this week with a four-point advantage at the top of the La Liga standings.

However, the German has had to contend with widespread injury issues since his arrival at the club, several of which have been to key players.

Although there is the prospect of some of those players returning to action in due course, Flick will be without another star man for at least a month.

Olmo suffers injury in Girona game

Olmo made his third appearance of the season in the triumph at their neighbours, netting his third goal of the campaign in the process.

Having put Barcelona into a 3-0 lead after 47 minutes, Olmo would have been one of the players under consideration to be substituted by Flick as the game ticked past the hour mark.

Nevertheless, his withdrawal in the 61st minute was a consequence of suffering a hamstring injury, leading to Hector Fort being introduced into the action.

With the Champions League fixture at Monaco coming on Thursday, Olmo would have been ruled out of that contest even before an official announcement was made on Monday.

That said, the injury is perhaps worse than Flick and the club's fanbase would have anticipated, it being revealed that the 26-year-old will sit out the next four to five weeks.

What games will Olmo miss?

Although the latter part of his recovery will take place across the October international break, Barcelona first have six games to contend with in different competitions.

Villarreal, Getafe, Osasuna and Alaves are all to come between now and October 6, while Monaco and Young Boys are the opponents in the Champions League.

With Bayern Munich scheduled to travel to Spain for a European fixture on October 23 and the El Clasico with Real Madrid being played three days later, Barcelona will be hoping that the Euro 2024 winner can recover in time for that double-header.
