The 28-year-old joined Stoke in 2008 from Sheffield United but has failed to claim a regular spot in the starting lineup.
He has had three loan spells away from the Britannia Stadium, two at Preston North End and one with Derby County.
The midfielder has joined the Tykes until the end of the season.
