Preview: Bayern Munich vs. Dynamo Kiev - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Champions League clash between Bayern Munich and Dynamo Kiev, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Dynamo Kiev will seek to pull off the shock of all shocks when they travel to Bayern Munich for Wednesday's Champions League Group E battle.

Julian Nagelsmann's side trounced Barcelona 3-0 on the opening day, while their visitors played out a goalless draw with Benfica.

Not many managers can say they oversaw a dominant 3-0 success against Barcelona at Camp Nou - let alone a 34-year-old - but Nagelsmann's Bayern Munich were simply a class above their Catalan counterparts two weeks ago during a dominant display.

Thomas Muller's first-half opener preceded a second-half brace from Robert Lewandowski as Bayern's quest for continental glory began in perfect fashion, and that was just the latest in a long line of successes for the perennial Bundesliga champions.

Now boasting an eight-game winning run across all tournaments, Bayern were forced to play nearly an entire half of their Bundesliga encounter with Greuther Furth with 10 men after Benjamin Pavard's sending off, but strikes from Muller, Joshua Kimmich and an own goal from Sebastien Griesbeck propelled the Bavarians to a 3-1 win on Friday.

It may not have been a trouncing of a newly-promoted side that we have become accustomed to seeing from Bayern, but Nagelsmann's side nevertheless kept their hot streak going and have amassed a staggering 40 goals in their eight-match winning run - an average of five per game.

Bayern's most recent Champions League game at the Allianz Arena ended in defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in last year's quarter-finals, but they won their last eight European home encounters before that - unsurprisingly scoring at least two goals on each occasion.

While Benfica boasted 12 shots compared to Dynamo Kiev's eight on the opening matchday, neither side could make the breakthrough at the NSK Olimpisky during a 0-0 draw - a result which the Ukrainian side would have certainly accepted before the first whistle blew.

Mircea Lucescu's side have suffered a demoralising 3-0 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Super Cup since that stalemate, but they bounced back at the weekend with a 2-0 league win over Rukh Lviv, which saw Viktor Tsygankov and Denys Garmash find the back of the net.

As the only team in the Ukrainian top flight yet to lose a game this season, Dynamo's title defence has started in perfect fashion, but they have their work cut out to pip one of Bayern, Barcelona or Benfica to one of the top two spots in Group E - even if they are above the Catalan giants after one game.

Furthermore, the Ukrainian champions can only boast one win from their last 12 away games in the Champions League including qualifiers, and Lucescu does not exactly have fond memories of previous encounters with Bayern, as his Shakhtar side lost 7-0 in Munich during the 2014-15 season.

It has been 21 years since Bayern and Dynamo Kiev met in the Champions League - which ended in a 2-0 win for the Ukrainian side on home soil - although Bayern won the reverse fixture 2-1 at home in the 1999-2000 group stage.

Team News

Bayern trio Sven Ulreich, Kingsley Coman and Corentin Tolisso are expected to be their side's only absentees for Wednesday's game, but Coman is already reported to be back in training after undergoing a minor heart operation.

Pavard's sending off at the weekend will not impact his participation in this game, and Nagelsmann may revert to a four-man defence after starting with a three against Greuther Furth, with Niklas Sule potentially the unlucky one to drop out.

Jamal Musiala once again caught the eye as he started Bayern's 3-0 drubbing of Barca, but Serge Gnabry's return to fitness should see the former Arsenal man given the nod this time around.

Meanwhile, Dynamo Kiev's injury problems in attack are not letting up, with four strikers in Eric Ramirez, Artem Besedin, Vladyslav Kulach and Ibrahim Kargbo all expected to miss out due to various ailments.

Centre-back Denys Popov is a long-term absentee for the visitors after undergoing surgery on a cruciate ligament rupture, and after helping his side keep a clean sheet on the opening matchday, 19-year-old Ilya Zabarnyi could be rewarded with the task of keeping Lewandowski quiet.

Midfielders Sergiy Sydorchuk and Mykola Shaparenko were both rested at the weekend - potentially with this game in mind - while Vladyslav Supryaga will hope to get the nod up top.

Bayern Munich possible starting lineup:
Neuer; Pavard, Upamecano, Hernandez, Davies; Kimmich, Goretzka; Gnabry, Muller, Sane; Lewandowski

Dynamo Kiev possible starting lineup:
Bushchan; Kedziora, Zabarnyi, Syrota, Mykolenko; Shaparenko, Sydorchuk, Garmash; Tsygankov, Supryaga, De Pena

We say: Bayern Munich 3-0 Dynamo Kiev

Dynamo Kiev are hardly the easiest side to break down - as Benfica found out two weeks ago - but such a youthful backline may come unstuck against a rampant Bayern.

Nagelsmann's side are sweeping aside everything in their path this season and have their eyes firmly on the continental prize, so we can only back the hosts to run out comfortable winners.
