Hans-Joachim Watzke: 'Borussia Dortmund will return to top four'

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Jochim Watzke is certain that Thomas Tuchel will lead the club back to contention in the Bundesliga.

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has claimed that the club are contenders for the Bundesliga title this season.

After years of competing as Bayern Munich's biggest rival in Germany, Dortmund fell behind in a disastrous campaign which saw Jurgen Klopp lead his side to seventh spot before ending his seven-year spell at the club.

However, Watzke is certain that Thomas Tuchel will lead the team back into the top four after starting the season with an emphatic 4-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

"Bayern are and remain the main favourites to win the Bundesliga title," Watzke told Bild.

"As for the Champions League places, people who wrote off Borussia Dortmund made a mistake. We were always there.

"Even if nobody really could have imagined we would put in such a performance against Gladbach. But we have two important games coming up now. The mood was jubilant after last season's win over Schalke as well, but we then fell deep again after that."

Dortmund visit Odd in the first leg of their Europa League playoff tie on Thursday.
