Two second-half goals have given Brentford an important 2-0 home win over Tranmere Rovers, keeping them in contention for an automatic promotion spot this season.

Tranmere's Ryan Lowe had the game's first real chance, but his right-footed shot from the centre of the box was saved in the top right corner.

Brentford also went close in the opening minutes when Clayton Donaldson's effort was saved in the top corner of goal by Fon Williams.

William Grigg thought he had put the hosts ahead with a dangerous shot, but Williams again did well to turn the ball away from goal.

Brentford could have gone into the break a goal to the good, but Jonathan Douglas somehow sent his header wide of the post, despite rising highest above his marker.

The home side continued their dominance after half time and they almost found the lead through Alan Judge, but his effort was beaten away from the top corner.

Brentford finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute when James Tarkowski latched on to Jake Bidwell's cross to head into the bottom corner.

The hosts' three points were confirmed with 15 minutes to go, as Donaldson met Judge's cross with his head to make it 2-0.
