Bristol's Carling Cup game with Swindon is called off due to rioting.

Bristol's first round Carling Cup match with Swindon is the latest fixture to be called off in the wake of widespread rioting throughout the UK.

The news follows confirmation that England's friendly with Holland has been cancelled, alongside postponements of tonight's Carling Cup games for West Ham and Charlton.

Although rioting was initially confined to London, last night the violence spread to Birmingham, Liverpool and Bristol. Subsequently the police requested that the game with Swindon be called off.

"It's disappointing but we totally understand the reasons given by the Police," said Bristol City chairman Colin Sexstone. "Clearly the most important factor is people's safety and these are exceptional circumstances the Police are dealing with."

The club added that it would discuss rescheduling the fixture "at the appropriate time".
