Match Analysis: Porto 2-1 Chelsea

Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at Porto's 2-1 victory over Chelsea on Jose Mourinho's return to the Estadio Do Dragao.

Chelsea dropped down to third in Champions League Group G courtesy of a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Porto at the Estadio Do Dragao this evening.

The hosts took the lead through Andre Andre when he swept home a rebound six minutes before the break, but Willian scored with the final kick of the half to send the two sides in level.

Maicon then got what proved to be the winner seven minutes after the restart, before both sides hit the woodwork in search of the game's fourth goal.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at whether Porto deserved the points on what was Jose Mourinho's return to the club where he made his name.

Was the result fair?

Absolutely. Chelsea may have had more of the ball this evening, but Porto were the better side on the night and deserve to come away with all three points. The visitors failed to use their possession well enough, as evidenced by managing just three shots on target despite having 57% of the ball. They looked content to come away with a point from the game, and didn't do enough to get themselves back into the match once they fell behind for a second time.

It was an entertaining contest, despite lacking a bit of quality at times, and Chelsea can certainly point to a few incidents that may have changed the course of the match. Pedro was denied by Iker Casillas, Diego Costa hit the crossbar and had a strong penalty shout turned down, while Branislav Ivanovic missed a glorious headed chance as well. The visitors had the openings to have got something out of the game, but it would have been harsh on a Porto team who performed so well.

The first half was fairly even, but over the course of the 90 minutes the hosts just looked more composed, confident and comfortable than their opponents. They themselves hit the post and put the Chelsea goal under some heavy pressure, and it could have been even worse for Mourinho's side in the end. The visitors could make a convincing case for earning a point had they come away with a draw, but they were second best on the night and deservedly slumped to another defeat.

Porto's performance

Porto entered this match tipped to finish second behind Chelsea in Group G, but they may well have promoted themselves to favourites after this performance. They were always going to be a formidable outfit at home - tonight's victory makes it 18 consecutive wins in front of their own fans in all competitions, during which time they have beaten Bayern Munich and conceded just four goals - but while they will undoubtedly be a test for any side at the Estadio Do Dragao, they showed tonight that they also have the players capable of making them a force in the competition.

Yacine Brahimi overcame a knee problem to start, and he gave Ivanovic a torrid time down Porto's left. Vincent Aboubakar, the latest in a long line of impressive strikers at the club, led the way brilliantly from start to finish, while the likes of Gilbert Imbula, Danilo Pereira and Ruben Neves also shone. It was a fantastic team display from the hosts, and they played Chelsea off the park at times. They looked stronger, faster and more skilful than their visitors, and for much of the match they were the only side really going for the win.

A little fortune did go their way - Ivan Marcano was lucky not to be penalised for a handball in the box right at the death, while Costa's shot which hit the bar had Casillas beaten all ends up - but they also hit the woodwork themselves and had chances to extend their lead. They were well worth the three points this evening and, even accounting for the fact that Chelsea are going through a tough patch at the moment, this is not a stadium that any team will want to visit.

Chelsea's performance

The troubles continue to pile up for Chelsea. In an effort to jolt his side into life, Mourinho surprisingly omitted Eden Hazard from the starting lineup this evening, with the Belgian joining other established names such as Nemanja Matic and John Terry on the bench. If it was intended as a wake-up call, it didn't work. Chelsea were once again far short of the standards they set themselves last season, with the likes of Ivanovic, Cesc Fabregas and Costa all struggling to make an impact.

In fairness to Costa, he played well in the first half, but Chelsea were too cautious when it came to getting players up in support - a sign that Mourinho would have been happy with a draw. The striker faded in the second half, aside from his effort that smashed the underside of the bar, and that left Chelsea without a potent attacking threat. As mentioned, they had their moments when Ivanovic should have scored, while Hazard admirably stayed on his feet when a penalty was there to be won, but Asmir Begovic was certainly the busier of the two goalkeepers.

Simply put, it was another lacklustre display. Both goals could have been avoided, and there needs to be another inquest as to why a side who were so tight at the back last season have seemingly forgotten how to defend. They backed off their man too often, which allowed Brahimi and Aboubakar to run the show, while in midfield they were outplayed and gave the ball away on numerous occasions. The Blues have now lost five games in all competitions this season - already more than in the entire 2014-15 campaign. This simply isn't the same Chelsea right now, and Mourinho needs to fix that sooner rather than later.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Yacine Brahimi: This is a toss-up between Aboubakar and Brahimi, but the latter gets it for the way he ran riot against Ivanovic. The winger beat him time after time, sometimes ducking inside and sometimes going on the outside. It was his fine play that led to the first goal and he was a constant danger from start to finish this evening.

Biggest gaffe

Chelsea's defending for the winning goal deserves a mention here as they let Maicon get to the ball and sneak it inside the near post far too easily. However, Casillas, on his record-breaking 152nd Champions League appearance, gets the nod. He was statuesque as Willian's free kick flashed into the corner on the goalkeeper's side and, while it won't come under the category of a howler, unlike his later attempted punch that Ivanovic should have capitalised on, he still should have done better.

Referee performance

Antonio Mateu had a fine game in the middle today, at least for 89 minutes. All seven of the yellow cards he dished out were deserved, while he seemed to get every 50-50 call right too. However, Chelsea felt that they should have had a penalty late on when the ball struck the hand of Marcano, and the replays showed that they had a point. In fairness to the referee, though, the assistant behind the goal was in a much better position and should have helped him out.

What next?

Porto: Porto will look to continue their unbeaten start to the season when they hosts Belenenses on Sunday.

Chelsea: Far from being unbeaten, struggling Chelsea take on Southampton this Saturday in growing need of a victory.
