Ray Wilkins: 'Champions League exit could be the end for Jose Mourinho'

Ray Wilkins believes that a premature exit from the Champions League could end Jose Mourinho's tenure as Chelsea manager following their struggles this season.

Ray Wilkins has claimed that Jose Mourinho could be sacked should Chelsea fail to progress to the knockout stage of the Champions League.

The Blues have endured a torrid campaign in the Premier League, which has placed the Portuguese under huge pressure in his role which was intensified by the club's defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Wilkins believes that the death knell for Mourinho would be a premature exit from the Champions League if his team fall to defeat against Porto in their final Group G match.

He told beIN Sports: "Any other manager would have gone, there are no two ways about it. Mourinho is only still there, purely and simply, for what he's done in the past.

"The big thing for Mourinho is Europe, he loves the European competition and Abramovich just adores it, so if they lose against Porto, then he could be on his way.

"They are away at Leicester next week so if something is going to happen, it will happen, I would have thought, after this week. I don't think it will happen this week."

Chelsea can advance to the knockout phase even if they lose to Porto, should Dynamo Kiev fail to defeat Maccabi Tel Aviv in their clash.
