Chelsea captain Gary Cahill: 'Top-four hopes are over'

Chelsea captain Gary Gary Cahill throws in the towel in the race for the top four.

Chelsea captain Gary Cahill has admitted that the club's hopes of finishing in the top four of the Premier League are over.

Sunday's 1-1 draw at home to West Ham United left Chelsea 10 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, and the Blues skipper does not believe that his team can make up that ground.

"If you're asking me if Tottenham are going to drop eight points plus, it's not going to happen. A good team is not going to let that kind of lead slip," The Sun quotes Cahill as saying.

"We've done it before when we were top of the league, it doesn't slip. If you're a good side, which they are, it doesn't slip. I will be very, very doubtful if that is the situation.

"The way that me and my team-mates play, we don't give up on anything, but we know that the season hasn't gone to plan."

Chelsea still have the chance to claim silverware this season as they take on Southampton in the semi-finals of the FA Cup later this month.
