Chelsea boss Antonio Conte insists that Brazilian defender David Luiz "deserves respect" for his impressive form this season.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has said that controversial centre-back David Luiz "deserves respect" for his impressive form since returning to Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window.

Luiz's return from Paris Saint-Germain was questioned in a number of quarters, with the Brazilian international known for his risk-taking in defensive areas during his first spell at Chelsea between 2011 and 2014.

The 29-year-old has thrived in a back three for Conte this term, however, and the Italian has paid tribute to Luiz's performances alongside Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta.

"He deserves respect - he is playing good football with the great attention with great concentration and I like this. I like this and he has to continue in this way because I know the football and until now he has played fantastic football," Conte told reporters.

Chelsea are currently three points clear at the top of the Premier League table ahead of Sunday's home game against West Bromwich Albion.
