Graham Potter: 'Chelsea will soon start scoring goals'

Head coach Graham Potter insists that his Chelsea side will soon start scoring goals after a prolonged barren spell in the final third.

Head coach Graham Potter has backed his Chelsea squad to start scoring goals on a regular basis.

While the Blues were rarely a free-scoring side under predecessor Thomas Tuchel, they have showed even less of a ruthless streak under Potter.

In their last 15 matches, Chelsea have netted more than once on just one occasion, that occurring against Bournemouth in their first fixture back after the World Cup break.

Since then, the West Londoners have astonishingly scored just four times in 10 outings, while just one goal has been recorded in their most recent five fixtures.

Chelsea have only won three of their last 16 games in all competitions, heaping the pressure on Potter and his side ahead of the short trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite criticism worsening by the week, Potter feels that his squad are not far away from finding their feet in the final third, insisting that things will soon "click".

Speaking to reporters, as quoted by football.london, Potter said: "If you watch the Dortmund game, play it ten times and we score maybe nine times. Joao Felix hits the bar, had a good chance in the first half. That is positive but you can go through little periods when it goes against you.

"It seems to be that way a bit. But if we perform to the level we did against Dortmund and the start of the West Ham game, we will score goals. The quality is there. When you integrate young players, it's not always easy for things to click.

"The most difficult part of the game is the attacking part. To get that fluidity, certainty in our attacking play, it's a process.

"We've spoken about it with individuals and as a group as to how to attack against Tottenham. We need to focus on the next game and that is Tottenham. They are a team that don't give much away, defend deep, we'll have to think about that."

Chelsea travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having failed to win any of their last nine away fixtures in all competitions, their last success coming at Red Bull Salzburg on October 25.

Potter's side now sit 11 points adrift of their fourth-placed opponents in the Premier League standings, albeit with a game in hand, and they have an opportunity to directly eat into their deficit at the weekend.

However, Chelsea enter this London derby on the back of receiving fierce criticism from supporters after last weekend's defeat at home to Southampton, Potter admitting that he cannot argue against the negativity aimed at his team.
