Chris Sutton: Fernando Torres is a “class” player for Chelsea

Sutton: ‘Fernando Torres needs luck’

Chris Sutton believes Chelsea striker Fernando Torres needs to be given "a break" from manager Andre Villas-Boas to regain top form.

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton is confident that Fernando Torres can regain his form despite failing to break his goal-scoring drought.

The 27-year-old, who joined the Blues from Liverpool last January for £50m, has come under criticism for not hitting the net competitively for Chelsea since April.

Despite the Spaniard’s lacklustre form in front of goal, Sutton is confident that the striker will come good for the former Premier League champions.

“I thought he played particularly well in the first game of the season at Stoke,” Sutton told talkSPORT. “He just needs a bit of luck - he is still a top player. Maybe he just needs something to go his way.

“I don’t know whether the manager [Andre] Villas-Boas knows what his best team is yet and who to pair him up with or whether they go three up top. He just needs a break.

"You don’t lose class. He’s certainly a class player and he’s proved that year in year out, up until last season.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea are gearing up for a trip to the Stadium of Light where they face Sunderland on Saturday in the Premier League.
