Fernando Torres escapes Football Association action

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres will not serve a ban for his clash with Jan Vertonghen on Saturday.

The Football Association have confirmed that Chelsea striker Fernando Torres will face no punishment for his weekend clash with Jan Vertonghen.

Early in the second half of Saturday's contest at White Hart Lane, Torres tripped up the Tottenham Hotspur defender, before appearing to sink his fingernails into the Belgian's face after a coming together.

It had been reported that the Spaniard could receive a three-match suspension for his actions, but a statement from the FA has revealed that no disciplinary activity will take place.

"One of the match officials saw the coming together of the two players, albeit not in its entirety," it read.

"In these particular circumstances, in line with The FA's policy on when retrospective action may be taken, reviewed this summer by the game's stakeholders (the Premier League, the Football League, the Professional Footballers' Association, the League Managers' Association, Professional Game Match Officials Limited and the National Game), no action may be taken."

Torres was later red-carded for another altercation with Vertonghen, but because he was handed two cautions, only a one-game ban will be enforced.
