England and Chelsea captain John Terry has admitted that he was "disappointed" to learn that he has been charged for alleged racist comments that he made to Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.
The 31-year-old, who is due to appear in court on Wednesday, February 1, has vowed to "fight tooth and nail" to clear his name.
"I'm disappointed with the decision to charge me," Terry said in a statement. "I hope to be given a chance to clear my name as quickly as possible.
"I have never aimed a racism remark at anyone and count people from all creeds amongst my friends.
"I will fight tooth and nail to prove my innocence."
Terry is expected to feature for Chelsea tomorrow evening as they travel to Tottenham Hotspur.
