Michy Batshuayi, Diego Costa net late goals as Chelsea beat Watford

Chelsea have made it two wins out of two for the new Premier League campaign with a 2-1 victory away at Watford.

Late goals from Michy Batshuayi and Diego Costa have earned Chelsea a 2-1 victory away at Watford.

Etienne Capoue had given the Hornets a second-half lead before Batshuayi and Costa both struck in the final 10 minutes to extend Antonio Conte's 100% start to the season.

Chelsea had the better of a quiet opening but it was Watford who created the first chance when Jose Holebas forced a save out of Thibaut Courtois with a low drive.

The Blues offered a response and were having most of the ball but they were struggling to create any clear-cut opportunities, and Watford almost made them pay from close range when Odion Ighalo fired over.

Shortly after the half-hour mark, Adlene Guedioura fired over from distance as the Hornets pressed for an opener but Chelsea ended the half on top with Eden Hazard seeing a tame free kick easily saved by Heurelho Gomes.

Chelsea returned for the restart on the front foot and Hazard should have done better when drilling a close-range attempt over the crossbar and he was soon made to pay as Watford went ahead.

After the ball found its way to Capoue on the edge of the area, the Frenchman chested the ball down before sending a volley into the top corner of Courtois's net.

The Blues mounted a response through Hazard, who had a shot towards the near post saved by Gomes, and Nemanja Matic who blazed off-target but as was the case during the opening 70 minutes, they were finding it difficult to create significant openings in front of goal.

They should have been awarded a penalty with 20 minutes remaining, however, when Craig Cathcart handled inside the area but the referee decided that it was accidental.

However, with 10 minutes left, that incident was forgotten as Chelsea found an equaliser through Batshuayi, who was in the right place at the right time to net from six yards after Gomes had saved from Hazard.

It appeared that the game was going to end on level terms but with three minutes remaining, substitute Cesc Fabregas sent a ball over the top for Costa and the Spanish international did the rest as he fired past Gomes for his second winning goal in the space of five days.
