Adriano Galliani plays down Michael Essien to AC Milan link

Chief executive Adriano Galliani says that AC Milan have not opened talks to sign Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien.

AC Milan's chief executive Adriano Galliani has insisted that talks have not taken place with Chelsea regarding Michael Essien.

Recent reports have suggested that Milan are keen to sign the Ghanaian midfielder, who can play in the Champions League, having not turned out for the West Londoners in the competition so far this term.

Despite that, Galliani has claimed that "there is not a negotiation open" for the 31-year-old.

"In these days there are a lot of contracts, but there is not a negotiation open with Essien. AC Milan's appeal is very strong and there are many agents offering their players," he told reporters.

"It is not yet certain that we'll take another midfielder, but having [Sulley] Muntari and [Riccardo] Montolivo banned in the Champions League [against Atletico Madrid] it is clear that if a new player will come he should be able to play in the Champions League."

Essien has made seven appearances this season, three of which have come in the Premier League.
