Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri believes that Gonzalo Higuain "will be able to score a lot" next season once he has adapted to the Premier League.

Maurizio Sarri has suggested that he expects Gonzalo Higuain's loan spell at Chelsea to be turned into a permanent transfer in the summer.

The 31-year-old striker was brought in from Juventus at the turn of the year on an initial six-month deal as a direct replacement for Alvaro Morata, who did not adapt to Sarri's playing style.

Higuain was a major hit under Sarri at Napoli, but he has taken time to get going at Stamford Bridge and questions have been asked about his quality, having found the net just four times in 14 matches for the West London outfit.

However, Sarri believes that the ex-Argentina international will be fully adapted by the time next season comes around.

Asked if Higuain would be at Stamford Bridge for the 2019-20 campaign, the Italian told reporters: "In theory, yes. It's difficult to adapt to the Premier League. I think in the next season he will be able to score a lot.

"For a striker it is difficult to get used to the Premier League. I remember [Luis] Suarez at Liverpool in his first season only scored three goals, then 16, then 24."

Higuain revealed earlier this month that he would prefer to stay at Chelsea than return to Juventus, where he is unwanted.
