England Under-21s boss Gareth Southgate: 'I don't need any help'

England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate insists that he does not need a mentor to help him as he has enough "support".

England Under-21s manager Gareth Southgate has insisted that he does not need a mentor to work with him following the team's disappointing campaign at the European Championships.

The Young Lions failed to progress past the group stage in the Czech Republic over the summer, but Southgate has insisted that he has all the help that he needs in the form of assistant Steve Holland.

"I don't think I'm an apprentice," the Daily Star quotes Southgate as saying. "I have 150 matches managing in the Premier League and the Championship.

"We had 18 games with one defeat in the lead-up to the summer and I don't think anybody was suggesting that at the time.

"I've got a person assisting me (Holland) who has won the Champions League, the Europa League and the Premier League, so I'm pretty happy with the support I've got."

Southgate has been manager of the Under-21s since 2013.
