Thomas Vermaelen has revealed that he was surprised by Arsenal teammate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's inclusion in England's Euro 2012 squad.
Roy Hodgson picked Oxlade-Chamberlain in his squad despite not having any previous caps for the full national team but Vermaelen is sure that the winger will impress if he is given a chance.
The Belgian told Sky Sports News: "I was a little bit surprised [to see him called up], but on the other hand he is a great player and deserves to be there.
"It will be a good experience for him. When he plays he will play with confidence and without any doubt in his mind so I think he will be fine. I hope he gets some playing time."
Oxlade-Chamberlain is expected to be given his first start against Belgium at Wembley on Saturday evening.
