Roy Hodgson: "It's not all gloom and doom"

England manager Roy Hodgson refuses to be downbeat following a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Chile in the first of a Wembley friendly double-header.

England manager Roy Hodgson has asked Three Lions fans to retain a sense of perspective following tonight's 2-0 humbling by Chile at Wembley, insisting that his young side will lean from a difficult evening.

Alexis Sanchez ensured that England were soundly beaten at Wembley with a fine brace finished in stoppage time, putting Hodgson under scrutiny after handing full debuts to Southampton duo Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez.

Hodgson believes that his experimental team were undeserving of a two-goal defeat, while insisting that they will strive for instant improvement as a group against Germany on Tuesday.

He told BBC Sport: "There was almost an entire team of our players who didn't play today. I don't think we were deserving of a heavier defeat than 1-0.

"People analyse things as they want to analyse them. The most important analysis is that of the people working with the team. We are fully aware that the team needs work.

"We hope to learn from what went on tonight and we hope to learn again on Tuesday. We will try to do a better job and send our fans home happy. It's not all doom and gloom. It's how you deal with defeats and we'll retain a sense of perspective."

Hodgson also made a frank omission that Chile were the better team during his post-match interview, handing credit to the South American side building towards a World Cup in their own continent next summer.
