Former England winger John Salako criticises Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson over his "negative" mindset.

Former England winger John Salako has criticised national team coach Roy Hodgson following the 1-1 draw with Montenegro.

The Three Lions squandered a first-half lead to drop two points in Podgorica, and the ex-Coventry City star believes that Hodgson's "negative" mindset was to blame.

"Everything I heard from Roy Hodgson was negative in the build-up to the game. He kept saying a point would do," he told talkSPORT.

"Going in at half time I was thinking he would need [to give] a massive team talk but England came out at the start of the second half and we just disappeared.

"We gave the ball away and they just got right on top. I was then thinking we've got to do something. Roy had to shake it up but from then on we were waiting to get beat."

Salako went on to describe the display as a "typical England performance" and insisted that the team should have picked up maximum points.

"It's another typical England performance where we should win the game comfortably. We're talking about Montenegro, not Brazil or Argentina. We're just not good enough," he added.

Salako earned five senior caps for England during his career.
