Everton chairman downplays David Moyes exit reports

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright remains hopeful that David Moyes will stay on as manager next season.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has downplayed reports that manager David Moyes will leave the club this summer.

The Scot's contract expires at the end of the season, and he has refused to discuss his future on Merseyside, but Kenwright is hopeful that he will extend his stay.

"He's made a simple statement, give me to the end of the season," the Toffees chairman told Sky Sports News.

"He knows in making that statement it's not the easiest one for the football club and he's acknowledged that to me. But he also knows the respect I have for him.

"So hopefully in seven weeks when the last match is played we can have the five minutes that David has alluded to for the last six months or so that will sort out a new contract, a new adventure, and keep David at the football club. If it doesn't, the man leaves with his head held high."

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has been touted as a potential replacement for Moyes at Goodison Park, but Kenwright has insisted that the club is not actively seeking another manager.

"Does the phone ring? Yes. What is my response? My response is very simple - Everton Football Club has its manager," he added.

Everton are in Premier League action this weekend when they take on Stoke City at home.
