Everton boss Roberto Martinez defends John Stones's display against Swansea City

Everton manager Roberto Martinez defends John Stones's performance against Swansea and claims that he can become one of England's "greatest players".

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has defended John Stones's display against Swansea City after the defender was criticised.

The England international is rumoured to be a target for at least six of Europe's top clubs following his emergence as Everton's number one centre-back.

However, in last weekend's 2-1 defeat to Swansea City at Goodison Park, Stones's performance came under the microscope.

In Tuesday's press conference, Martinez defended his player by telling reporters: "John is 21. He has played 68 games in the Premier league. Never assess a player till they have 100 starts, then you can judge them. He has incredible potential but he is still a young man.

"Whatever the judgement from the outside, we accept it, that is part of the game, but I think Stones is in the right place to fulfil his potential and become one of the greatest players England has ever seen."

Everton are currently 12th in the Premier League table.
