Roberto Martinez: 'We need to protect players from transfer rumours'

Everton boss Roberto Martinez reiterates that the transfer window should be closed before the start of the new season to stop unsettling players.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has reiterated his stance that the transfer window should be shut before the start of the season in order to 'protect the league and players'.

The Merseyside outfit have been at the centre of transfer gossip in recent weeks following a rejected joint £28m bid from Manchester United for midfielder Marouane Fellaini and full-back Leighton Baines.

"It is getting a little bit too much at the moment," Martinez said in this morning's press conference. "It's not just here, in every dressing room you get these sorts of stories and I think we need to do something to protect the league and the players. We need to be respectful to the fans and stop all this transfer window business when the games are going on."

Despite Martinez's call to change the dates of the summer transfer deadline, the former Wigan Athletic boss has stated that the club are still searching for new players to sign.
