PEC Zwolle reach KNVB Beker final with shootout win over FC Twente

PEC Zwolle continue the defence of their KNVB Beker title by beating FC Twente on penalties in the semi-final.

A 4-2 penalty shootout triumph has earned defending champions PEC Zwolle a place in the final of the KNVB Beker after playing out a 1-1 draw with FC Twente over 120 minutes.

It was Zwolle who looked the more dangerous of the two sides for much of the first half, but the hosts came closest early on when Youness Mokhtar fired just wide after evading a couple of challenges.

The visitors should have been ahead before the interval as a patient passing move created a chance for Mustafa Saymak, whose weak effort was kept out by Nick Marsman.

A long ball forward from Joost Boerse early in the second half caused problems for the Twente defence, but Tomas Necid could only drag his shot wide of the target.

Chances continued to be difficult to come by for both sides, but Twente almost snatched the win heading into the closing stages when Kamohelo Mokotjo sliced a volley just over.

However, it looked like Zwolle had clinched the win when Wout Brama volleyed home after being gifted space in the box.

There would be another twist with three minutes of normal time when Andreas Bjelland headed the ball into the path of Mokhtar, who kept his composure to force extra time with a calm finish.

Twente midfielder Hakim Ziyech threatened in the first extra period with a curled effort which drifted just over the crossbar.

Neither side were able to force home a winner over the 30 minutes, and penalties were eventually needed to decide the tie.

Both sides scored their opening penalty before Thomas Lam and Kyle Ebecilio both failed from 12 yards to leave the scores level after four spot kicks.

Robbert Schilder struck the post to give Necid the opportunity to secure the win for Zwolle, and he made no mistake as the visiting side booked their spot in the final once again.
