Vincenzo Montella targets top spot in Group E

Vincenzo Montella wants Fiorentina to win their Europa League group in order to avoid the teams who have dropped from the Champions League.

Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella has admitted that he is aiming to win Group E of the Europa League in order to avoid the more difficult teams in the next round.

Viola are currently top of the group with maximum points, but Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk are just three behind, and while they are already through Montella would prefer not to come up against one of the Champions League sides in the next round.

"Certainly finishing top is extra motivation in order to avoid the clubs that are coming from the Champions League in the next round," he told reporters.

"We must give our response on the pitch after a defeat in Serie A - we must get on the right path and win. It is important to analyse Sunday's defeat and understand where we went wrong. We had the wrong approach on how to get back into the game and worked hard, but in an inefficient fashion.

"I am satisfied with what I have seen so far [in Europe]. Our objective in the Europa League is to go as far as possible, ideally to the final."

Fiorentina are currently fifth in Serie A.
