Nicolas Gonzalez signs a new contract with Serie A side Fiorentina after rejecting the chance to join Brentford over the summer.

Nicolas Gonzalez has signed a new contract with Fiorentina following his decision to turn down a summer move to Brentford.

Gonzalez attracted interest from the Bees after enjoying a successful 2022-23 campaign, scoring 14 goals and providing five assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

The Argentina international helped his side reach the final of the Europa Conference League, where they fell just short against West Ham United.

Brentford were keen to strengthen their attacking options in the summer, and they identified Gonzalez as a potential target after failing in their bid to sign Brennan Johnson.

The Bees saw their initial £26m bid for Gonzalez rejected, before they returned to the negotiating table with an improved £35m offer.

However, Fiorentina and Gonzalez decided to turn down Brentford's proposal, ensuring that the winger remained at the Serie A club when the transfer window slammed shut.

Brentford subsequently turned their attention to PSV Eindhoven's Johan Bakayoko, but they also failed to convince the Belgium international to complete a move to West London.

After turning down Brentford's advances, Gonzalez has now committed his long-term future to Vincenzo Italiano's side.

Fiorentina announced on Tuesday that Gonzalez has signed an extension which will keep him at the Italian club until the summer of 2028.

Gonzalez's decision to pen a new deal with Fiorentina is likely to end any speculation about a possible move away from the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The 25-year-old will be focused on continuing his fine start to the new season after registering four goals and one assist in seven competitive games.

Gonzalez, who has scored five times in 26 appearances for Argentina, is expected to be involved when Fiorentina face Frosinone in Thursday's Serie A contest.
