Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon says that the 2018 World Cup came "too early" as he targets a spot in the England squad for Euro 2020.

Ryan Sessegnon has said that the 2018 World Cup came "too early" for him, but the Fulham attacker is targeting a spot in the England squad for the European Championships in 2020.

Sessegnon, 18, scored 16 times and registered eight assists in 52 appearances for Fulham last season.

There were suggestions that the teenager was being considered for this year's World Cup, but he was ultimately not named in Gareth Southgate's squad.

Sessegnon has admitted that he would not have been ready for the tournament in Russia, but is confident of playing in both Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.

"I was surprised to have my name mentioned. It was good for me," the London Evening Standard quotes Sessegnon as saying. "I was excited, but I think it was too early for the World Cup. Hopefully the next one.

"I think at the next Euros and the next World Cup you are going to see more young players in the squad. It is only a positive thing."

Sessegnon is believed to be a transfer target for a number of leading Premier League clubs.
