Germany beat Sweden to advance to quarter-finals

Germany advance through to the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup with a 4-1 victory over Sweden.

Germany have advanced through to the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup after knocking Sweden out of the competition with a comfortable 4-1 victory.

Anja Mittag opened the scoring for the Germans after 24 minutes as she burst through the opposition half and slotted a right-footed shot into the far corner from outside of the box.

Celia Sasic doubled the lead for Germany as she converted a penalty, as Mittag was dubiously brought down inside the area.

The Germans were in complete control towards the end of the first half and they carried on that performance after the restart, with their continuous pressure eventually leading to their third goal.

Sasic grabbed her second of the game 10 minutes from time, as Simone Laudehr's deflected shot rebounded off the post and fell straight to Sasic, who headed home from close range.

However, Sweden scored a consolation goal minutes after Sasic's second when an out-swinging delivery was headed powerfully into the back of the net by Linda Sembrant, giving the Swedes some hope.

Sweden then had the chance to make it 3-2 but were unable to convert their one-on-one chance shortly after their first goal of the game.

Dzenifer Marozsan then rounded off the scoring for Germany when her sliding shot from a short corner looped over the Swedish goalkeeper.
