Germany coach Joachim Low insists that the world champions need Mesut Ozil if they are to progress through the World Cup.

Germany coach Joachim Low has insisted that the world champions need Mesut Ozil if they are to progress through the World Cup.

Arsenal midfielder Ozil, who started Germany's opening defeat to Mexico, was dropped for Saturday's 2-1 win over Sweden, which saw Toni Kroos strike a late winner.

The manager told The Mirror that Ozil is an important part of the team, despite opting for Julian Brandt and Mario Gomez as substitutes in the second half against Sweden.

"We have strong competition with us in the squad," Low said.

"We will still need his creativity in the tournament."

Ozil's omission from the squad against the Swedes ended a run of 26 consecutive starts in major tournaments for the 29-year-old.
